Phil Allen began his music studies at age 7 with piano and then added trumpet at age 10. While still in high school he began the study of music theory and arranging and by age 18 was playing professionally as a pianist in the Indianapolis area. After time at Hanover College and Indiana University, Phil moved back to Indianapolis to continue his music studies privately with Jim Edison, Steve Allee, Alan Foust and Alan Kiger, while continuing to perform and arrange with area bands. He played 2nd trombone and wrote for the Von Ohlen/Allee Big Band for over 5 years in the mid 70’s as well as freelancing as a pianist. In the 80’s and early 90’s Phil played with and wrote for a number of “territory” bands as well as leading his own bands.
Phil moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1996. By 1998 he was playing trombone with and writing for the College of San Mateo Monday Night band, the Collective West Jazz Orchestra as well as the contemporary worship band at First Presbyterian Church San Mateo. During this time he worked on a number of recordings done at First Presbyterian; wrote special arrangements for Christmas, Easter and 2 Gospel Concerts and wrote, produced and performed on Downbeat 9:30 by the Collective West.
Phil and his wife Barbara moved to Colorado Springs from the San Francisco area in January 2008. Since that time he has played with the Springs Contemporary Jazz Orchestra and Tom Taylor’s Needlewood Orchestra; written for the Air Force Falconaires; has been teaching low brass the past 2 years at Woodland Park Middle School; taught Intro to Blues Theory for the Pikes Peak Blues Society in 2009, and started a new 12-piece big band, Thin Air Jazz (www.thinairjazz.com) which has been performing monthly at the Ancient Mariner in Manitou Springs as well as other venues.
Phil is highly regarded as a performer and arranger/composer. A large amount of his musical knowledge and improvisational skill comes from experience playing with and writing for top bands of all sizes.
