Shin's Music Studio - Music Lessons Through Piano and more...

Gordon Lewis began playing saxophone when he was 9 years old and guitar when he was 14 years old. After about one year of playing guitar Gordon flew out to San Diego to go to Power Chord Academy where he learned how to work in the music business, make connections, make music, and become a professional musician. To make extra money he started to give guitar lessons at the high school he attended because the previous guitar teacher quit. He then decided to take piano lessons in 9th grade so that he could become more fluent in theory. A bluegrass band hired him to run sound for them at events and gigs that they played in northern Minnesota. He took part in a state competition where he played Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Brahms on saxophone and sang Beautiful Dreamer by Stephen Foster and received excellent and superior ratings. Throughout high school he went to Norshore Music Camp at UMD in Duluth Minnesota. Gordon was also involved in choir from 7th-11th grade.
When Gordon’s guitar skills became more polished, he decided to move to Golden Valley, Minnesota where he attended the Perpich Center for Performing arts. As quickly as he started he was working with ensemble groups three to four hours a day solidifying song ideas, ear training and practicing. Gordon felt like he could still improve my guitar skills so he began to take guitar lessons at Macphail Center for Music in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After he graduated from high school he went to Mesabi Community College in Virginia Minnesota to get his Associate of Arts Degree. His musical time there was spent playing in punk and rock bands and writing his own music while still practicing technical skills. Around this time he picked up the banjo and began taking college lessons for credit hours.
Gordon spent one summer in Baudette Minnesota playing saxophone in the community band. He moved to Springfield, Missouri to further pursue his musical education at Evangel University where he played in the jazz band, pep band, and university band. He was able to obtain a scholarship by auditioning with classical pieces he prepared. He also took guitar lessons and had a guitar class, during which we would sight read musical pieces. During this time Gordon decided that he needed to perform live with a band so he joined a ska/reggae/soul group named Bringers of the Dawn in which he played both saxophone and guitar simultaneously.
After Gordon left Evangel he attended Missouri State University where he took ear training, sight reading and music theory courses. Once again he was in search of another musical engagement so he and his girlfriend (Grace Easley, violin) began performing as a duet.
