Dan Commerford has taught thirty seven years in the state of Kansas and recently retired from teaching at the secondary level. He taught at Manhattan High School in Kansas for twenty two years, and most recently in Topeka, Kansas at Washburn Rural High School. Both schools have an enrollment of 1900 students. He also taught at Wamego High School and Colby High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Music Degrees from Kansas State University.
Dan's choirs were selected five times to perform at the Kansas Music Educator's Association In-Service Work Shops. In 1982, his Colby Choir participated in the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. His choirs participated in the Kansas High School Activity Association State Music Festivals where they were consistently awarded Superior Ratings. His Manhattan Choir performed eight times in Orlando, Florida at the Walt Disney World "Magic Music Days".
Dan's background in High School Musical Theatre is extensive. He has been involved as the Music Director in 27 Broadway Musicals. His experience as a private voice teacher is far reaching as well. He has worked with hundreds of students in his 37 years of Music Education with many students choosing to pursue music professions.
Dan has served as an adjudicator and clinician for various music festivals in Kansas and Nebraska and has served on the staff of the "Kansas State University Summer Choral Institute" at Kansas State University. Dan was presented the Master Teacher/Summer Choral Institute Outstanding Choral Director Award in 2001.
Dan was privileged to serve the Kansas State University Music Department as an Interim Instructor while the University conducted a National Search to replace long time directors Rod Walker and Gerald Polich. Dan's duties included directing the K-State Choir, Women's Glee, Men's Glee, Chorale and the K-State Singers.
Dan served as President of the Kansas American Choral Director's Association and is a member of several professional organizations, including KMEA, MENC, ACDA, KNEA, and NEA.
Dan and his wife Ann have been married for forty one years. They have two children, Jennifer Wright of Colorado Springs and Brian Commerford of Overland Park, Kansas. Dan and Ann have five grandchildren, Sarah and Tim Wright and Hadley, Ella and Carter Commerford.
